Hollywood is made of a million stories. Here is just one.
Homan and Hollywood
J. Scott and I were staying in Hollywood for a week or two a few years back. Scott had just done the Aspen Comedy Festival and killed. There was a lot of buzz about him in Hollywood. So, we flew out to L.A., got a room at the Best Western on Sunset Blvd. and set out to make that boy a star.
There was a meeting scheduled at Grubb street productions (Kelsey Grammer's Company) at Paramount Studios. Having had a great meal the night before at Musso and Frank Grill, the next morning we headed out to Paramount where we were to meet Bo from Power Entertainment. There had been a lot of talk about putting Scott in a sit-com with Tess, who is black and about 300 pounds.
It was early in the morning for us both, and being a bit nervous, we could not decide if we should go to Winchell's for Donuts, or Gil Turners liquor store on Sunset Blvd. We opted for Gil Turners..... We probably should have chosen Winchell's in hindsight, but...
After passing a pint of Vodka back and forth we met Bo at the Melrose gate of Paramount and marched inside like John Wayne and Charles Bronson. After all the pleasant introductions to the kind folks of Grubb Street, we were handed bottles of Fiji water, and Scott, Bo and I marched into a meeting room where we sat facing about 6-7 Grubb Street executives.
After some small talk, one of the ladies said, "Scott, what do you see yourself doing in a sitcom?" Scott looked her straight in the eye and said, " Well, I see myself playing a stand up comic who sidelines as a super hero!" Bo had a look of sheer terror on his face and blurted out, "Or, we had an idea of Scott playing the role of Tess's husband in an interracial relationship." Scott retorted, "Yeah, but in that show, I don't get to wear a cape!!" One of the ladies across from us both had just taken a drink of her water and laughed so hard, she sprayed both Scott and I in the face, and had to leave the room she was so embarrased. Later that night Duke Wayne and Chuck Bronson were on the red eye back to Little Rock. More stories to follow.
